Abay Square

Abay is a small town located in Jacetania, in the heart of the Aragón valley in The Pyrenees.

Abay is at the foot of the Oscenses Pyrenees and is around 7kms away from Jaca. With rural tourism on the rise in this beautiful town, it is beginning to rival agriculure as the its main economic source.

Here you will find the spectacular Church of San Andreas and the Chapel of the Virgin del Carmen.
The San Andrés church was built during the 11th and 12th Century and is of Romanesque style.

Inside the church there are various sculptural pieces, including the remains of a rare Romanesque processional cross. You will also find ageless Romanesque paintings and valuable silver work, such as the beautiful consecration box. Probably the most stunning feature is the sculpture of the seated virgin.

The chapel of the virgin of Carmen attracts many visitors each year. Beside it there is a large cross. Traditionally, travellers on the Camino de Santiago would stop at the cross and pray to God for a safe journey, something still practised to this very day.
