Abay is a small town located in Jacetania, in the heart of valley of Aragón. This small town it is right on the foot of the Oscenses Pyrenees. Abay is just 7kms from Jaca. Nowadays, the main activity is agriculture; cattle ranching is quite important here. Rural tourism has also increased over the years.
Here you will find the spectacular Church of San Andreas and the Chapel of the Virgin del Carmen.
The San Andrés church was built during the 11th and 12th Century. The style is Romanesque.
Inside the church there are various sculptural pieces, including the remains of a rare Romanesque processional cross. You will also find ageless Romanesque paintings, and valuable silver work, such as the beautiful consecration box. Probably the most stunning feature is the sculpture of the seated virgin.
The chapel of the virgin of Carmen attracts many visitors each year. Beside it there is a large cross. Traditionally, travellers on the Camino de Santiago would stop at the cross and pray to God for a safe journey. They still do this day. |
